Transportation Initiative

Mayor Demings' Seal

On April 3, 2020, Mayor Jerry L. Demings announced the suspension of his pursuit of the transportation sales tax referendum on the November ballot.

“Times are just too uncertain right now, so we are postponing our efforts. We will take up the transportation sales tax proposal after the pandemic is over. Our current focus is solely on the health and welfare of our residents.”
Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings

Each week, nearly 1,000 residents move to Central Florida – growing to Orange County’s 1.35 million population. This presents challenges in providing proper roads, infrastructure, mass transit, sidewalks, etc.

At the 2019 State of the County, Mayor Demings announced pursuing a transportation sales tax referendum in November 2020.

The Mayor’s Transportation Initiative has reached its first milestone! We have now concluded the initial community engagement phase of this effort. Mayor Demings asked for input by holding community meetings and listening, learning and gathering feedback from residents through both meetings and the County’s transportation survey. Mayor Demings and staff have participated in more than 200 community engagement opportunities, including town halls, stakeholder group discussions, neighborhood meetings, media interviews and community events. In addition, more than 10,000 residents participated in the transportation survey.

Following the community engagement phase, Orange County will be providing the public and the Board of County Commissioners updates on the transportation initiative, which will highlight the feedback received. Based on the feedback, the County will formulate a transportation plan for the Board’s review. See the timeline below for a general overview of the next steps.
