General Information

For over 50 years the Orange County Landfill at 5901 Young Pine Road has been the principal site for disposal and is permitted for another 100 years. Private homes, businesses, and industry all generate waste that is delivered to the landfill every day and compacted into layers. At the end of each day, the waste is covered to reduce odors and discourage birds and rodents from getting into the waste. Orange County follows a comprehensive set of guidelines and regulations for the final cover of waste areas.

Gases are generated as waste begins to break down or decompose. A majority of the gases are methane and carbon dioxide, which are odorless and colorless. Landfill gas also contains nitrogen, ammonia, sulfur compounds, and other gases that may create odors. Methane gas from the Orange County Landfill is collected through an extensive system of extraction wells and used as fuel at the Orlando Utilities Commission's Stanton Energy Plant to provide electricity for up to 12,000 homes.

While hydrogen sulfide is detectable at very low concentrations by the human nose, low levels of exposure are not harmful, according to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
