Who We Are

Our Vision

Orange County will be a healthy and safe place to work, live, and play.

Our Mission

The mission of the Coalition is to work in collaboration with community members and agencies to prevent and reduce the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs among youth and adults through taking a leadership role in prevention education, enforcement, treatment and recovery.

History and Background

The Orange County Drug-Free Coalition was formed in 1999 to lead county-wide substance use prevention programs and strategies. Coalition workgroups meet monthly to strategize and rally support for access to treatment and recovery services as well as to prevent high-risk behaviors including the use of alcohol, tobacco/nicotine, products, marijuana, other illicit drugs, and prescription drug misuse.

  • Active members attend meetings monthly and are involved in the day-to-day work of the coalition.
  • Supporting members are not able to attend meetings regularly, but are familiar with the work of the coalition and support prevention efforts.
  • Extended members are not necessarily aware of the day-to-day work of the coalition, but are community leaders who may need to be contacted occasionally regarding specific prevention issues.

What is Prevention?

Effective substance use prevention requires a public health approach. We rely on strategies built around the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) Model. The Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) is a great resource to learn more about prevention. Some of their resources include Primers that detail each step of the SPF process, webinars, and other training resources. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is another excellent resource!
