Orange County’s Don’t Pitch It, Fix It! event was part of the Environmental Protection Division’s Pollution Prevention (P2) program. The program is focused on reducing or eliminating the sources of pollution, one of which is landfill waste. Reducing purchases, reusing items, recycling and repairing broken items all help to achieve Orange County’s goal of significantly reducing landfill waste by 2040, as stated in the Our Home for Life Sustainability Plan. The Don’t Pitch It, Fix It! event gave residents the opportunity to have broken items repaired by local businesses and handy neighbors, keeping them out of the landfill.

On April 21, 2018, Orange County hosted its first Don’t Pitch It, Fix It! event at Blanchard Park YMCA. There were 13 fixers in attendance repairing a variety of items including jewelry, clothing, an umbrella, a pressure washer, fishing rods and reels, a bed frame, several bicycles and a television. In addition, many landscaping tools, kitchen knives and scissors were sharpened. Overall, 61 items were repaired keeping them out of the landfill and furthering Orange County’s sustainability goals.

Check back this summer to learn more about the next Don’t Pitch It, Fix It! event tentatively being planned for Sept. 15 at Barnett Park.
